Can two glasses of wine genuinely derail your health for days? That question about the alcohol effects on the body has sparked a full-blown cultural row across British social media. It started with a podcast and ended with celebrities taking sides.
Entrepreneur Steven Bartlett, best known from Dragons’ Den, claimed drinking a couple of glasses of wine “ruined three days” of his life. His Whoop fitness tracker showed disrupted sleep, poor eating habits, and shifts in both stress and happiness levels. The claim drew scientific backing from some experts. It drew mockery from others.
BBC Radio 1 Breakfast host Greg James led the pushback. He launched what he cheerfully called an “anti-Bartlett cult” and urged people to put their phones down and enjoy life. Fearne Cotton, Julia Bradbury, Gabby Logan, and rapper Example all rallied behind him.
The real question, though, is a serious one. What do the alcohol effects on the body actually look like after just a modest drink?
What the Science Says About Alcohol Effects on the Body
Experts were largely measured in their response. They neither dismissed Bartlett’s experience nor endorsed a three-day recovery timeline.
Professor Adam Taylor, an anatomy expert at Lancaster University, explained that the alcohol effects on the body vary considerably from person to person. Tolerance, glass size, and alcohol strength all play a role. “A couple of glasses of wine would be sufficient to have an impact on sleep that night,” he said. “Alcohol helps people fall asleep but alters the sleep pattern through the night, reducing the body’s ability to get into REM sleep.”
As the alcohol wears off, the nervous system tries to reset. This can cause broken sleep. Taylor also noted that the liver focuses on clearing alcohol from the system. That process temporarily disrupts its ability to regulate blood sugar. The resulting drop in blood sugar could explain why Bartlett reported eating poorly the following day.
Taylor was clear, though: for most people, the body returns to normal within 24 hours. “Depending on people’s tolerance and lifestyle, these effects can be longer or shorter.”
When the Effects of Drinking Alcohol Last Longer
For people who rarely drink, the effects of drinking alcohol hit differently. Professor David Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacology expert at Imperial College London and a former government adviser, said even a small amount can visibly affect brain chemistry in light or non-drinkers.
Disrupted sleep and poor concentration can follow for at least one night. Knock-on effects may stretch further. Professor Nutt also pointed to neuroinflammation, where nervous tissue becomes inflamed, as something that can linger beyond the initial night.
This matters because the body treats an unusual event differently from a routine one. For a rare drinker, two glasses represent a bigger physiological event than the same amount would for someone who drinks moderately on a regular basis. That does not make either choice better. But it does explain why people experience alcohol so differently.
The numbers are worth noting here. NHS guidance advises adults to drink no more than 14 units per week, spread across at least three days. That works out to roughly six medium glasses of wine. Despite that, Alcohol Change UK reports the average UK adult drinks around 21 units per week. That figure sits about a third above the recommended ceiling.
Are Fitness Trackers Actually Telling You the Truth?
The alcohol effects on the body sit at the centre of the Bartlett controversy, but so does the question of how he measured them. One in three Britons now owns a smartwatch. Most people use them to track sleep, heart rate, VO2 max, and stress. Devices like Whoop estimate cortisol and stress levels by monitoring heart rate variability, meaning the tiny fluctuations in time between heartbeats.
These tools can reveal useful patterns. But some research questions how people respond to the data. Scientists at the University of Delaware surveyed 200 smartwatch users. Those who checked their devices most often were more likely to reward themselves with food after exercise. Researchers called this “compensatory eating.” Women showed this tendency more strongly than men. The study, published in Cyberpsychology, Behaviour and Social Networking, concluded that the positive health impact of wearables “may be limited for some users as compensatory eating can derail fitness goals.”
The devices are not useless. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting explored providing wearables to NHS patients to help track symptoms and treatment responses. The potential is real. The risks of over-interpreting the data are equally real.
The Psychological Cost of Constant Self-Monitoring
Psychotherapist Katerina Georgiou, accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, raised a concern that goes beyond sleep scores and step counts.
“There can be a tendency to fixate on getting your metrics such as correct steps, and this becoming such a consuming part of your day-to-day that what begins as a form of tracking and control can seep into taking control over your life,” she said.
She warned that discipline can tip into shame. When that happens, the tracking itself becomes the problem. It occupies mental space in ways that are as unhelpful as the behaviours people want to avoid. “When discipline turns into a shame-based affair, where you start reprimanding yourself for not having achieved the target goal, that can be counterproductive and takes up headspace.”
There is also a concern about self-diagnosis. Health data that doctors once held exclusively now sits on people’s wrists. Some experts worry this fuels health anxiety and erodes people’s natural bodily intuition. Broadcaster Beverley Turner captured the worry plainly: “These people will become deskilled at listening to their bodies.”
Finding the Balance
Julia Bradbury, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, summed up the broader debate with quiet clarity. “It’s about progress not perfection, and fun.”
For anyone trying to understand the effects of drinking alcohol on their own health, the honest answer is that it depends. Age, body weight, drinking frequency, food intake, and genetics all shape the outcome. A wearable device offers one data point. It does not offer the full picture.
What the science does support is that no level of alcohol consumption carries zero risk. Even modest amounts affect sleep quality for most people. Whether that means two glasses of wine costs three days, or just one restless night, only you can judge. A fitness tracker cannot tell you how to weigh that against a good evening with people you care about.
