New data reveals that alcohol and gambling donations to political parties totalled $2.474 million in 2023-24, fuelling debates over their influence on policymaking. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) Transparency Register reported that alcohol companies contributed $998,000, gambling firms $661,000, and businesses involved in both industries added $815,000. This financial support mainly benefited the Australian Labor Party, which received 61% of the funds, while the Liberal National Party secured 38%. Advocacy groups, including the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) and the Alliance for Gambling Reform (AGR), are pushing for reforms to tackle the sway of these industries on critical public health policies.

FARE CEO Caterina Giorgi criticised these donations, arguing they often delay reforms that could benefit families and communities. She called for a ban on political donations from alcohol and gambling companies to ensure policymaking focuses on public welfare rather than corporate interests. Martin Thomas, CEO of AGR, highlighted spikes in donations during legislative reform discussions, describing this as a blatant effort to influence outcomes and undermine democratic processes. Both leaders point to the successful ban on tobacco donations as evidence that Australia can protect its democracy from industries causing significant harm. With growing calls for action, the spotlight is firmly on alcohol and gambling donations and their role in shaping policies that affect communities nationwide.
