AHA Urges Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to Address Alcohol Harm

The Alcohol Health Alliance (AHA) has written a letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, urging immediate action to tackle alcohol-related harm in the UK. In the letter, the AHA highlights the devastating impact of alcohol on public health, including thousands of deaths and significant strain on the NHS. The coalition of over 60 organisations calls for comprehensive measures, such as minimum unit pricing for alcohol, better labelling and health warnings, and restrictions on alcohol marketing and availability.

The AHA stresses that implementing these policies will save lives, reduce healthcare costs, and create a healthier society. They specifically point out the success of minimum unit pricing in Scotland and Wales, where early evidence suggests it has led to reductions in alcohol consumption and related harms. The letter also emphasises the need for robust public health campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive drinking and support for individuals struggling with alcohol dependence.
