Synthetic Kratom Dangers Prompt Health Advisory

Health authorities have issued an urgent warning about a dangerous compound called 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH, a potent synthetic derivative of kratom. The substance can be up to 13 times stronger than morphine and poses serious health risks, including potential death.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services announced the health advisory following a dramatic surge in cases. Between January and September 2025, the Missouri Poison Centre received 47 reports involving kratom or 7-OH—double the number from the previous year. At least one case resulted in hospitalisation.

Hidden Risks in Common Products

The compound is sold as consumables like gummies, candies, powders, and liquid shots. One critical concern is that the presence or amount of 7-OH in items is not always accurately disclosed on packaging, meaning consumers may unknowingly ingest dangerous doses.

This unregulated, opioid-like substance has not been tested for safety, resulting in increased calls to poison centres. The compound’s potency at opioid receptors makes it particularly hazardous.

Warning Signs and Symptoms

Health officials warn that synthetic kratom use can cause severe symptoms:

• Nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal distress
• Anxiety, agitation, confusion, and insomnia
• Rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and trouble breathing
• Seizures, unconsciousness, and withdrawal symptoms
• Risk of overdose, especially when combined with alcohol or other sedatives

Growing Crisis

The doubling of cases in just one year highlights the emerging threat posed by synthetic kratom products. With the substance being 13 times more potent than morphine yet sold without proper safety testing or accurate labelling, public health experts stress the importance of awareness.

The advisory serves as a warning to avoid products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop after consuming any kratom-related products.
